Alíz

Until June this year she lived a carefree life as the youngest of four children. In July, a severe brain tumour was found. Since then her family has been fighting every day to give Alíz every possible chance.

What happened?

  1. She began suffering from recurring, stabbing headaches at the back of her head. By July her condition had worsened further.

  2. An MRI scan found a tumour of almost five centimetres in her brainstem, already pressing on a ventricle of the brain. Alíz was taken by ambulance to the Department of Neurosurgery at Semmelweis University in Budapest.

  3. First operation: a sample was taken from the tumour, and the surgeons tried to free up space around the brainstem.

  4. Second operation: a shunt was implanted to drain the accumulating cerebrospinal fluid. After that, Alíz's condition began to improve.

  5. The histology confirmed a more serious diagnosis than expected: an H3 K27M-mutant diffuse midline glioma, a WHO grade 4 tumour.

  6. According to the family, Alíz has now completed 30 radiotherapy sessions.

The diagnosis

Diffuse midline glioma (DMG) · H3 K27M-mutant · WHO grade 4

A rare and extremely aggressive childhood brain tumour. In Alíz's case it grows in the brainstem, so it cannot be removed surgically. Treating these tumours is one of the hardest challenges in medicine today, which is why the family is looking for options that offer a chance, both in Hungary and abroad.

The next steps

After the 30 radiotherapy sessions, the parents are placing their hopes in two immunotherapy treatments abroad. The amounts are the family's published preliminary estimates, not final quotes: the family has said they have not yet received the exact price of the first treatment.

  • Dendritic cell therapyLaboratories Dr. Gansauge, Berg (Bavaria, Germany)preliminary estimate HUF 6–7 million, plus travel, accommodation and a stay of at least one week
  • Hyperthermia, virotherapy and immunotherapyIOZK, Cologne (Germany)about HUF 31 million

According to the family's preliminary estimate, the two treatments abroad will cost about HUF 37–38 million together, not including travel, accommodation and other additional costs.

The family

Alíz has a 13-year-old sister and two 9-year-old twin brothers. Her parents, Zoltán and Viktória, set up the Facebook page Együtt Alízért (“Together for Alíz”), where they post updates on Alíz's condition and on charity initiatives.

“One thing is certain: we will not give up.”
